Who are they?
Founded in 2002 in Borja, Bodegas Alto Moncayo specializes in Garnacha, the emblematic grape of this part of Aragon. The estate cultivates about 120 hectares of vines, including several old parcels planted on the foothills of the Moncayo. The vineyards sit at different altitudes and rest on poor, stony soils where red clay, schist, sandstone and gravel contribute to the diversity of the terroir. Alto Moncayo, the estate's flagship cuvée, shows a particularly concentrated and ambitious expression of Garnacha.

Garnacha at the centre
The estate was built around Garnacha and old local vines, with the goal of showing the grape's depth, concentration and its ability to express the different sectors of Campo de Borja.
Old vines
Several parcels consist of Garnacha vines several decades old. For the Alto Moncayo cuvée, the vines are notably between 40 and 70 years old.
Altitude, stone and cierzo
The vineyards extend across the foothills of the Moncayo, in a dry environment marked by altitude, poor stony soils and the cierzo, the region's characteristic wind.

Because Alto Moncayo shows how far Garnacha can go when concentration and power are sought. In our journey, the estate offers an especially interesting contrast with Cabernet Sauvignon: two imposing reds, but built in very different ways.
