France
Pays de la Loire
Pays de la Loire covers a territory larger than the single idea of a wine appellation. To the west, the Atlantic influence is particularly strong, and the vineyards near Nantes are closely associated with Melon de Bourgogne, the grape of Muscadet. Moving inland, other areas give more space to Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. The wines are generally marked by freshness and are particularly well suited to the table. It’s a useful region for understanding how the Loire gradually shifts from the ocean toward more continental zones.
